Frequently Asked Questions

What is a PAC?

The term “political action committee” (PAC) refers to political committees registered with the Federal Election Commission (FEC). Separate segregated funds (SSFs), like OPAC, are political committees established and administered by corporations, labor unions, membership organizations or trade associations. These committees can solicit contributions only from individuals associated with connected or sponsoring organization.

What is the AOIA?

The American Osteopathic Information Association (AOIA) is the 501(c)(6) membership organization uniquely dedicated to gathering and disseminating information about osteopathic physicians and the osteopathic profession. Representing osteopathic physicians and students in this capacity, the AOIA provides many benefits to its members including the opportunity to be politically involved in campaigns and elections. The AOIA serves this purpose for the osteopathic community through its political arm, OPAC.

Is OPAC separate from the American Osteopathic Association (AOA)?

Yes.  OPAC is a political action committee of the American Osteopathic Information Association, which has a 501(c)(6) tax status.  The AOA is a 501(c)(3) membership organization representing osteopathic physicians. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) prohibits organizations with a 501(c)(3) tax status, like the AOA, from political campaign activity.  However, 501(c)(6) organizations, like the AOIA are allowed to maintain political action committees.

Who can contribute to OPAC?

AOIA members may contribute to OPAC. Members who contribute make it possible for OPAC and the osteopathic profession to have significant impact in elections. Through contributions, members are able to attend special events and meetings, have access to key political news, and – most importantly – help OPAC increase its strength as the advocate for the osteopathic profession in campaigns and elections.

How is my contribution used?

OPAC political activities are funded by voluntary contributions of its members above and beyond their AOIA membership dues. Contributions to OPAC are used to fund political programs and for direct support of pro-physician candidates.

Who does OPAC support?

OPAC supports pro-physician candidates for federal office. The decision to support an individual is based on a thorough evaluation of all candidates, taking into account legislative voting records where applicable, positions on key physician issues, responses to OPAC’s candidate questionnaire (for non-incumbents), input from osteopathic physicians in the state or district, the political environment and additional information.

Can I recommend a candidate for OPAC endorsement?

OPAC has a process for candidates to be considered for endorsement. We welcome the input of our members and encourage you to let us know about pro-physician candidates running for Congress.
